Schools
The Screven County School System provides developmentally appropriate and challenging programs for all local students in grades Pre-K through 12. With the slogan "...a safe place where everyone matters, everyone learns, and everyone succeeds," the commitment to excellence resonates among more than 2,400 students and 350 faculty and staff in three modern schools.
The facilities, equipped with the latest educational technology, are large enough to provide excellent services and opportunities, but small enough to give all students the individual attention they deserve. SCSS is comprised of three schools and one alternative program operated as a satellite of the middle and high school.
Screven County Elementary serves 1,198 students in grades PreK-5; Screven County Middle serves 549 students in grades 6-8; Screven County High serves 687 students in grades 9-12. There is one private school located in the district, Community Christian School, which houses grades Pre-K through 7 and has about 40 students.
SCSS realizes that while academics are an important part of an education, enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities strengthen student engagement by instilling a sense of belonging. Activities are available to students at all levels. Music, Art, and Physical Education programs have been maintained at the elementary school despite recent cutbacks. The middle school exploratory program has been restored to a more comprehensive program with the re-establishment of chorus. High School students can select from many different career path options through the CTAE, Fine Arts, and Foreign Language programs.
The school district is especially proud of its middle and high school FFA program that have both won national honors. Other school clubs include Y-Club, 4-H, FCCLA, FCA, and National Honor Society.
The school system also strives to maintain a comprehensive and competitive athletic program. Students may become involved in athletics as early as sixth grade and choose from a variety of sports including track, cross-country, softball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, tennis, cheerleading, In a recent school year SCHS athletics has met with much success as Region Runner-up in softball and cheerleading and Region Champion in cross-country and football.
Some of the most notable recent achievements for SCSS graduation rates: 82.3 percent for 2010-2011 and 81.4 percent for 2011-2012. Statistics for 2012-2013 are not yet available; however, one-fourth of the 2013 graduates were honor students. These statistics are significantly higher than statewide graduation rates.
Along with the increased graduation rate, SCHS has experienced notable advances in academic achievement as measured by 2012 and 2013 End of Course Test scores. Again, the district bested statewide scores in all but one category and earned designation from the Georgia DOE as a Highest Progress Reward School.
SCES and SCMS have also received awards from the state for academic achievement within the past three years. In 210, SCES was named a Title I Distinguished School for the fourth consecutive year as it had made AYP for the preceding seven years. SCMS received the Title I Distinguished School for the third consecutive year in 2009 after making AYP for the preceding six years. SCMS also received the State Superintendent's Distinguished Achievement Award for improvements in eighth grade Math.
Higher Education
Ogeechee Technical College has a satellite campus in Sylvania and there are two technical colleges, a state college and a university within an hour of Sylvania in Statesboro (25 miles) and Swainsboro (50 miles).
Ogeechee Technical College at Statesboro has 2,237 students and Southeastern Technical College at Swainsboro has 700 students.
East Georgia State College at Swainsboro has 2,944 students and Georgia Southern University at Statesboro has 20,574 students.
